#mylocalworld – discovering how other people’s everyday worlds look

The celebrations for Not A Ballerina’s tenth birthday continue and for April, I’m holding a photo-a-day challenge – #mylocalworld.

The idea is that readers and followers from all around the world can share an image a day during April, following the topics below, so that we can all build up a picture of how everyday aspects of life look for people in different parts of the world. Getting to know the local way of life is one of my favourite parts of travelling and this way, using social media, we can all get a taste of that together.

My Local World topics - Not A Ballerina photo a day challenge

If you’re an Instagram user, then follow me @amandakendle and you should see this image in my Instagram feed to remind you of the daily image prompts. When April 1st hits, you’ll see the prompt is “Sky”, so take a photo of some aspect of your local sky (I’m curious to see how many are cloudy and how many aren’t!) and post it to Instagram. In your caption, use the #mylocalworld hashtag and mention me (@amandakendle) so that I can see the image. I’ll share the best!

If you’re not an Instagram user, you can still take part by posting an image on the Not A Ballerina Facebook page. Use the #mylocalworld hashtag in your caption too because it’ll help me find your picture more quickly. Check the topics – 1st April is “Sky”, 2nd April is “Garbage”, and so on – and post your image each day – or as many days as you remember!

Discovering everyday life in other places

So, please yell out if you have any questions about the #mylocalworld challenge, because I’d love to have lots of people from lots of different places take part. I already know from my travels that it’s often the unexpected differences that are memorable – for example, my students discovering that Australia had plastic money, or my son learning about the differences between garbage collection services across the world. I’m so looking forward to seeing what kind of images everybody shares and what we can discover about everyday life around the world. Please share with your friends so we can make this a really international event!
