Some people travel to see the sights; some to eat the food. I like doing both of these too, but one of my favourite things to do while I’m travelling is to make new friends. And that’s what Episode 35 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast is all about.
Whether I’m making completely new friends by random chance when I’m travelling, or getting to know people better by travelling with them or even living and working with them when I’m staying somewhere longer term abroad, I just love it.
Last week in Japan I got to spend the week with fellow Aussie blogger Kim-Ling of Travel-Ling and our fabulous guide Mariko. There’s nothing quite like a crazily-hectic week of seeing Osaka, Sakai and Kobe to either drive you apart or bond you, and I have to say I was lucky that both these ladies turned out to be great new friends!
The only downside of making friends on your travels is that your heart gets scattered out across the whole world. I have a fantasy of winning an enormous amount of money and flying all the people I miss across the world to one place at the same time, but other than that, I’ll have to put up with catching up on Facebook and occasional face-to-face meetings in random places around the globe.

Making Friends Through Travel
In Episode 35 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I have a lot of fun chatting about the magic of making friends while you travel. There are so many bonuses of travel they don’t advertise in the brochures and developing friendships with people from all around the world is certainly one of them.
Julie Jones joins me to chat about the lifelong friendships she has formed while travelling and we muse on just why it seems easier to make friends when we’re away from home. After Julie, I chat with Holly Galbraith about her many experiences of both making new friends and enhancing existing friendships through her travels.
Finally, one of my all-time favourite guests Jeff Ryan talks about a different kind of friend he made while travelling. You’ll have to listen to find out what “different” means!
