It seems a bit too momentous, this opening blog entry, but then again, it’s something that’ll gradually slip down the page and only the most devoted reader will find it again, right?
Just the same, let me tell you something about why this blog’s here. Together with my website, it’s part of an attempt to convince myself – and subsequently the world, which seems to be easier to convince than me – that I’m a writer. And to leap completely out of the closet about it. My good friend and all-round-artist Jeff Bilman (screenwriter, cartoonist, painter extraordinaire) told me quite clearly a year or so ago that there’s no point being a writer that nobody knows about. I should be loud, proud and out there. He was right, of course, and you’ll never believe this: since then, when I’ve nervously told people I’m a writer, not one of them has laughed in my face. Not one!
Right now, it’s travel writing that gets most of my attention, largely because this is where I have the most material. I’m currently living and working in southern Germany, after a year in Bratislava, Slovakia, and two in Osaka, Japan. Along with my like-minded boyfriend, Ian, we’ve been travelling and exploring as much as possible, and travel stories arise pretty naturally out of this, especially when I add Ian’s great photos to the mix. But like many, my ultimate dream is to publish a book – or in my case, at least two, a novel and a travel narrative. Watch this space!
Hi Amanda,
It’s always interesting to see the first post ever written on my favourite blogs, and yours is no exception! I wonder if you thought back then that you’d be writing and publishing online a decade later? It’s funny to think the day you published this post was the very day I set off on my first ever holiday without parental supervision (apart from Leavers at Rotto), a road trip down to Denmark with my friend Sofie when we’d both only just gotten our drivers licences! It seemed like such a big adventure at the time 😀
Oh no! Someone found it!! A big part of me wants to delete it but of course I’m too sentimental to dos. That’s hilarious that you were off on your first grown up holiday on that day! (And how did you remember?) (Oh and I did leavers at Rotto too … that was rather icky!!!!). But anyway: thanks for looking – that does make me feel a bit special I must say! x
Yep, Leavers was pretty gross for me too! I think that’s universal no matter where you go and what year haha
I’m like an elephant, I have a very good long term & random facts memory (made up for by a useless short term memory) and I’m often thinking “on this day 8,9,10 years ago…”.
Hope you don’t delete your very first post, it’s all part of the journey!
Haha yes I think Leavers is *meant* to be gross!
I’m impressed by your elephant memory! I have lots of journals and stuff and sometimes look them up to see what I was doing but I don’t have any idea just in my head.
And I promise not to delete my very first post, even though it’s kind of embarrassing!!
