Picture pirouette: Not a penguin at Penguin Island

Gull in flight at Penguin Island

I’ve been thinking about penguins this morning. I can blame Pam from Nerd’s Eye View for that as she’s been tweeting and writing about penguin spotting from her recent Antarctic trip (yes, I’m extremely jealous!) and then it occurred to me that hey, I don’t need to go to Antarctica to see penguins, we actually have our own right here just off the coast of Perth at Penguin Island.

And the beauty is that there’s more than just penguins at Penguin Island. These gulls have a home there too – nesting and breeding there, if I remember correctly. They’re not quite as cute as penguins, but they sure are better at flying!

(P.S. I figure I should also show you some of our penguins – these are in the centre on the island, but the same kind live there in the wild. Cute, hey?)

(P.P.S. I used to call that bird up the top a sea gull, but Andy taught me it’s just a gull. Thanks!)

  1. Penguin Island is well worth a visit, just make sure you take care if you are going to walk over there! Interesting about the gull – I will have to look that up!

    • You’re right Aaron – you have to watch the tide, don’t you. And yes the gull thing was told to me by a serious birding friend, I haven’t actually checked beyond that, i just believed him!
